How to copy out a file w/o copying out every reference

    Hi,

When I copy out or export a file, every reference that is in the file comes with it.  However, sometimes I just want to export the file that is loaded without all of the references that are attached to the drawing.  Is there an option or a setting I can change that would allow me to copy out or export a file without also exporting every single reference located in that file?

    Thank you.

      Hi Larry,

Yes there is an option for this. For converting drawings without the reference files go to "Save As" then "Options", then "References" tab, then you can chose to "Retain", "Merge" or "Omit" Self and External Attachements. I believe the option you want is "Omit".

      Hope this helps.

      José

      Dear Larry,

One note this "copy out" will break all the reference file links (?) and leave refernce fiels with a projectwise working directory in the micorstaiton file. Is thei srelly what you want. ?

      Best Regards,

      Hi Ian,

On a normal occassion, no I do not wish to break all of the reference file links.  To give you an example of the specific situation in which I'm looking to do this:  I have a file I'm working in which has about 27 references in it.  However, I really only need to keep 2 displayed at all times.  For the other references, I will occassionally turn their display on if I need to look at something.  So I'd like to keep them in there so I can quickly turn a display on if I need to check one of the references, rather than have to attach and detach them anytime I wanted to look at them.

One of my co-workers needed to copy this file to his local hard drive, and he doesn't need to see the references, he just needs to see what is actually drawn in the file itself.  However, anytime he exports or copies the file out, all 27 references come with it and get saved to his local hard drive.

So I was just looking to see if there is a way you can choose to copy or export a file without copying all of the references as well, similar to how in microstation, when you reference a file, you have the option of bringing in the nested references or not bringing in the nested references.

      Thank you for your response.

      Dear Larry,

It looks like you have it covered well.

We do not have so much issue with display off by export but we have display off for the same easy of use you note.

      Best Regards,

      Ian Emery
