    Document Attributes

Is there a SQL statement that will allow a document attribute to be automatically set to a project attribute?  For example, if "County" is a project attribute with a value of Lexington, we would like all the documents that are added to this project to automatically have thier document attribute assume the value of Lexington.

I know users can search project attributes, but the Search Builder is a little complicated for casual users who don't use ProjectWise often.  However, the Attributes page is easier for these users to understand, and we can set their default search form to use this page.

You can actually create an evironment attribute and set the default value (or update value) to a project property.

In PW administrator, just go the properties of the environment attribute and go to the value tab.  in the type drop down, select "System Variable", then click the ... button to the right of the system variable field and select the Project Properties tab, where you can choose which of your project properties you want as the value of this particular attribute.

Thanks Molly.  This worked well.  Now I have another question.  :)

Is there a way to have these attributes automatically applied to the document?  It appears we have to open and update the attribute properties of each document before the default values from the project get applied.

The project attritubes will be the only attributes that apply to a good number of our documents.  Therefore, it would be nice to not have to open the attributes tab and change one of them in order to get the default values to apply to the document.

If you set the project property in default value, it will be assigned when the document is first created.  For documents that already exist, or for when the project property might change and you need the environment attribute to change, you want to also configure update value.

The thing is that you need to tell it when to trigger the update, it will have to be when another attribute changes, or you can say when any attribute changes... but how you set it up would depend on how your environment is configured and what other attributes you might have.

Just adding to Molly's reply - if you want the default values to actually be saved in the environment when the document is first created, just enable the "Create attribute records upon document creation" for that environment from within the ProjectWise Administrator.
