    ProjectWise Performance - Caching Server

    We have been experiencing delays in Checking out and checking in files, exporting files, etc where the transfer dialog sits there like nothing is happening for an average of about 1 min.  These delays seem to be approximately every 10 min.  The caching limit has been reached and it appears that a process is running (purge pass?) to scan for the oldest files to be purged out.  We are using the default purgebatchsize value of 1000 files.  We noticed that when the purge pass is running it seems to pretty much take up all the resources of the server or brings it to a stop for a period of time.

    VM Server 2003 SP 2 Standard Editions

    Intel Xeon CPU, X5650 @ 2.67 GHz, 2.66. GHz, 2.00 GB of Ram

    ProjectWise Caching Server (SELECTseries 3) v08.11.09.091

    Cache section in dmskrnl.cfg on caching server

    [cache]

    Enabled=True

    StoragePath = e:\ProjectWiseCache

    Limit = 8000

    Server statistics – 6.35 gb used under e:\ProjectWiseCache\files, 5,616 files in 34,011 folders (as of 7:30 am CDT 06-21-2012)

     Questions:

    1. Does this sound like a reasonable assumption of what is causing the delays?
    2. Is there a setting in the dmskrnl.cfg file to set the time for the purge pass to run?
    3. We are thinking of setting the limit to 0 to make the cache size limitless for a test period, will this prevent the purge pass from running?
    4. Would setting the cache limit to a lower value help minimize the delays we are seeing?
    5. Would setting the purgebatchsize to a lower value help?
    6. Any recommendations/suggestions on.

    Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

      It does sound like the purge pass is at the very least participating in the problem.  The very large number of empty folders may be a contributing factor, as the purge process must recurse down into each folder as it searches for purge candidates. Could you try deleting those empty folders ?

      Regarding your other questions:

      2. You can set the "PurgeInterval" dmskrnl.cfg setting under the [Cache] section. The allows you to specify the interval, in seconds, between cache purge executions.

      3. Yes, setting this value to 0 will turn off the purge process.

      4. Doubtful - I still think it's the number of empty folders that is the culprit here.

      5. See #4 above

      Thank you for your responses, very much aprreciated.  We see the delay on the server but are not sure what is causing them.  We did set the limit to 0 and it did not appear to stop the delays so we are looking elsewhere.   I will delete the empty folders also and making plans to upgrade to Server 2008 R2 to see if that helps.

      what happens if you set the purge inteval to 0 and the cache fills to the limit setting?

      We have increased our

      Limit = 8000

      to

      Limit = 20000 (20Gb).

      However, to my konwledge there is only one situation where you interact exclusivly with the caching server and that is on check out with a file that is cached and not updated on the main server.

      Are you experiencing these delays in that situation?

      Did you try turning Delta Transfer off? if  you are transfering large Bitmap files that are not compressable then that would take time to compress and decomparess for not much effect.
