AutoCAD 2012 References from multiple ProjectWise datasources

I hope this is the appropriate place to ask this question. I have several users that currently have three different ProjectWise datasources setup in their clients, one is our own, and the other two are from another company that we are working with. These users are opening an AutoCAD drawing from our datasource and need to re-attach a reference from another datasource. Is this possible? We are running on AutoCAD 2012 with the ProjectWise integration package installed. When we open the ProjectWise file open dialog in AutoCAD, it gives the option to log into another datasource. However, when we select the attach reference dialog from ProjectWise dialog, it doesn't give us the same option.

ProjectWise is setup to have all of the content that makes up a particular project to be in the same datasource.  Trying to create reference(x-ref) relationships between datasources is not allowed to avoid challenges around authentication, managing the links, access control, etc.  You can use the File-Open dialog to open a DWG from another datasource, but then any of the x-ref dialogs access would be in the context of that new datasource.

      HTH,

      John

Currently ProjectWise doesn't offer the ability to reference files from different datasources.

I can think of a couple of workarounds:

If the reference needs to remain visible in the DWG file then the best thing is to copy it into the datasource where the master resides. They could create their own reference folder to differentiate from the project reference files. Then they can attach the file and everyone with rights to that reference folder can see the XRef.

If the reference is necessary only for a short time or only for the user attaching the reference, Send to Folder could be used to copy the file out of the datasource into a known directory. Then the XRef could be attached from that folder. Remember though only that user can see the reference and everyone else will get the unresolved dialog..

There is an existing change request for this ability. You can open a service ticket using the ST Manager at appsnet.bentley.com/.../addcall.aspx if you want to have a service ticket for this change.

You might also look at setting up a distribution job to copy the xref files from one datasource to the other.  This can be scheduled to update the files several times a day if needed.  These jobs are work best when using a saved search so if you have an attribute that might flag the file for distribution you can cut down on the administration of keeping up with a list of file/folders.
