ProjectWise Export/Import Tool is now available for all ProjectWise users

    All,

For some time Bentley has offered a product known as the ProjectWise Export/Import tool.  This tool enabled the use of XLS spreadsheets as a mechanism for exporting and importing documents from/to ProjectWise datasources.  This tool previously required a separate license to use.

The ProjectWise Export/Import tool no longer requires a separate license and a new delivery of the tool without the license requirement compatible with ProjectWise V8i (SELECTseries 4) has been posted to Bentley SELECTservices and is available for use by any ProjectWise V8i (SELECTseries 4) user at no additional cost.  In the future, the capabilities provided by the ProjectWise Export/Import tool will be delivered in the standard ProjectWise delivery and downloads.

Here is a quick description of the capabilities provided by the ProjectWise Export/Import tool:

The ProjectWise Export/Import tools offer a comprehensive range of features for the bulk import of files and attribute data from external sources into ProjectWise or the bulk export of files and attribute data out of ProjectWise. The ProjectWise Export/Import tools use an Excel spreadsheet as the data interchange format.

The tools can be used in a number of ways:

    • To export documents and their attributes, so they can be sent to a third party for amendment, and then re-import the amended documents. Amendments to both the documents and their attributes are transferred into the data source.
    • To import documents and their attributes into ProjectWise, which have been exported from a third party program.
    • To import documents and their attributes into ProjectWise for the first time and manually enter the attribute data.

It is also possible to copy documents between data sources using these tools, but other ProjectWise tools are available to perform this function.

The ProjectWise Export/Import tools support the transfer of most standard ProjectWise attributes, including versions and the creation of new versions during import, but do not support workflows and states.

      Hi John,

We use PW SS1 (server and client), never bought PWEI license before.

Would it work if we only upgrade PW client to PW SS4 but server stays at PW SS1?   Any way to try this tool without first upgrading the server to PW SS4?  Thanks.

ProjectWise Explorer V8i (SELECTseries 4) is compatible with a SELECTseries 1 Integration Server.  The ProjectWise  Export/Import Tool is specific to the version of ProjectWise Explorer, so I don't see any reason why this combination would not work.

      HTH,

      John

As we have not had any PWEI license, we tried using it a few months ago on PWSS1 8.11.7.138 server/client setup using the PWEI 8.11.7.5 version.

Having seen this post, we would like to revisit the tool using the same setup.

On load PWE, the tool didn't come up at all apart from the initial license warning dialog.  I have also tried loading PW SS4 8.11.11.111 explorer, the tool didn't come up either.

I wonder if it is because we never have the PWEI license and it's gone over the 30-day grace period.

      John,

Does this Export/Import tool support changing the 'general' properties of our files, i.e. Document Name and Description?  We sometimes (once every 3 months) have the need to change Document Names and Descriptions on multiple files, and I tried doing this on the spreadsheet generated by the Export/Import tool.  However, it seems that the tool only supports changing the attributes but not the general document properties.  Even though I changed the Document Name and Description on the spreadheet, they do not change in ProjectWise when I import  the spreadsheet back.  Am I missing something?

      Thanks,

      Suzette
