    Defaul open DGNs in Project Wise to Microstation

    I'm working on a project that uses Project Wise as it's default location and access to DGN models. Normally, we simply find a model in the Project Wise Explorer interface, and double click the file to open it and check the file out of the system. Similary, when we finins, we are asked to check the file back in. All has been working fine, except that recently the file icon on some models has changed to include a red area. I've found that this means the file has some form of Benley Navigator tag associated with the file. With these modesl, even with the default application set to Microstation, it opens Navigator. If I force the open with micostation, the file opens as a read only file, and I'm undable to modify it.

    It is possible to open another file and exchange into the 'oops' filem, but there must be a corrective action that canbe taken. Can anyone advise.

    thanks for any help.

      G'day Barrie,

      Not sure why you are getting Navigator launching as the default application, I'd have to assume there was a change in either the PW system OR on your machine to make this happen. It seems you know to set the correct Application on the Gneral tab of the file properties and, assuming thats set correctly, if PW can find that application on your machine it should launch using that application.

      With regards to the "read only" when you use "open with".

      There is, on my PW Client, a toggle in the bottom left corner of the "Open document with..." dialog that says "open document as read-only". If you see that option, ensure the toggle is disabled and it should open for write. This assumes that you have write access to the file.

      Michael

      Thank you for the comments, but all set as you say. The defaul application is set to Microstation, but when double click it still opens with Navigator. The force open with is set and read only NOT ticked. I've been doing more and sometimes it works and sometimes it still opens read only.

      I think I have a networks 'oops' sometimes. We are having speed problems so I think I'll go to IT Support.

      Thanks again.

      This is a long shot, but check your Double Click action.

      Go to Tools-->Options-->Setttings Tab-->Document List

      See if your Double Click action setting is set to view, this would make Navigator open, as Navigator is proabably set in the MicroStation Application Group, View Action.

      If that still doesn't do it what happens, outside of ProjectWise, when you double click a .dgn file., if Navigator opens, then change you windows open with option and go back to ProjectWise and open a dgn file.  Your OS Registry may also be the cause.

      Determining which program or executable to use when opening a document is a two step process.  First, ProjectWise looks at the Application configured for that application.  In your case it is MicroStation.  Seconclly that Application is associated with the program/exe to launch.  In your case it is possible that Navigator is now the default program associated with the MicroStation Application.  You can check this in PW Explorer by going to Tools-Associations-Programs and checking your user settings for MicroStation.
