documentation for implementing manages workspaces in ProjectWise

I have been asked to look into testing/implementing managed workspaces in ProjectWise for a portion of our organization and haven't been able to locate any documentation that covers how it all works and steps to implement. I've seen some mentions of "managed configuration blocks" and "configuration settings blocks" in a couple of searches, but nothing too specific. I also looked at the Bentley LEARN site and there doesn't appear to be any learning paths that cover it. Can someone provide me with some direction or documentation that would help?

    Thanks,

    Stephanie

      Stephanie,

Have you looked at the ProjectWise Administrator help file?  If you take a look under the Workspaces category, there is a section on "configuring Managed Workspaces for MicroStation" which explains how to configure and implement managed workspaces into your environment.

Why would you prefer Managed Workspace?

      Hi Oto,

Despite my gripes with the interface, managed workspaces are a great, centralized way to control the workspace for distributed offices and sub-consultants.

To Stephanie: The ProjectWise Administrator Client course from Bentley covers the subject.

      Cheers,

      Adam

Idea is great but implementation could be better.

      Drawbacks:

      1. Managed workspaces can't be used locally in disconnected mode as it copies out nonstandard Workspace  structure.

      2. Even if some workspace files are deleted from PW they become orphaned until Workspace is manually purged by user

      3. Can't be directly customized from within Microstation at least it requires some tricks.

      4. Some key-ins doesn't work with managed workspaces

      5. CSB are not easy to edit

      6. Workspace is copied out in each Users working folder.

      I agree and disagree...

No. 1 is answered by No. 6 - If a user is connected remotely or if you are hosting a project in which sub-consultants are accessing your PW you would want the workspace to be accessed locally.  If not, access time would be an issue.  Workspace local = more production time and less time waiting for the workspace to load.  In addition I would not want a sub-consultant to access anything on a local network.

No. 2 - Agreed, it would be nice to have PW remove workspace files when they are removed from the Managed Workspace but the purge command is just as easy.

No. 3 - Why would you want an end user to customize a Managed Workspace when you as an Administrator have spent so much time creating and testing the Managed Workspace to load everything the end user needs?

      No. 4 - Agreed.

      No. 5 - Agreed.

      Sean
