Best Practices for i-model creation across all products

Currently, we are running MicroStation, Open Plant Modeler, Open Plant Model Server, Open Plant PID, AECOsim Building Designer, InRoads, Bentley Raceway and Cable Manager for our physical design...all inside ProjectWise .123 and a Managed Workspace.

We can't move to PW .574 at this time.

In the area around automating i-model creation, we have i-model Composition Server loaded, but it doesn't create intelligent i-models...you need to run the i-models from the discipline specific tools to get both geometry and data.  Additionally, ICS does not work in a managed environment.

Our thought was to use PW Automation Services to handle this in the interim, but it seems that only Open Plant Modeler (of the vertical apps listed) is able to act as a Processor Node for PWAS, which would allow us to create OPM models...but not any other i-models from the other vertical apps in the way we need them created.  (This doesn't even include I&W and promis*e for electrical schematic design.)

While we can accomplish the following, it seems very clunky and non-scaleable to have to setup MSBATCH jobs that run Batch Processor jobs and run via Windows Scheduler (which may be our only way right now across all the Vertical apps), as well as continuously export out our Managed Workspace(s) to a local server and keep that up to date.

So, now that I've spewed all that out....my question is "How are others handling this situation?"

FWIW, we've been told ICS in December should handle what we want to do, but that's a wait and see game, isn't it?

    Comments and thoughts are welcome...thanks.

      Shawn,

I am having similar frustrating issues with i-Model creation within the ProjectWise environment.

Bentley are promoting the use of i-Models and we can all see the benefits but until the creation and management integration is in place I am holding off using them as I am not confident that the output will match the source data.

Aside from the integration and creation issues that you have mentioned, I have concerns with the fact that the i-Models created in ProjectWise do not have any attributes and there is no way of mapping them or any ability to define relative output folders in a similar fashion to PDF Renditions.

I know that the Bentley development team are working on this but I first raised this issue a few years ago and only now are we getting some acknowledgement that it is going to (hopefully) be resolved.

Sorry I can't offer any constructive help but at least you know you are not the only one suffering!

      Regards

      Pete.

      HI ,

I would like to raise one point along with issues, here,

If there is any news of a common Model Server handling AECOsim Building Designer and Openplant component,

This would be more easier to handle I-models for them,

      Regards,
      Vivek
