Can PW PS be used as a non-PW Administrator?

    Hello,

I am a long time MicroStation (MS) user, but a brand new ProjectWise (PW) user. My current PW work tasks are being performed as a non-PW administrator for a PW workspace/datasource hosted by a state DOT. Here's my question: As a non-PW administrator, is it still possible to use some of the PW PS Cmdlets? For example, I am interested in discovering a method for easily checking-out multiple DGN files to my local computer, which I can then work on, and then when I am done, using an easy method to check-in all these DGN files.

    Thanks,
    Matt

Not in a way that you'll really be able to use it in this scenario. Pwps_dab can be run as non-admin but still requires you to be in a Projectwise group called "PowerShell Users" to do so. it sounds…

it sounds like you're trying to bypass using ProjectWise Explorer to open your files. Don't do this, for several reasons.

      1. Your reference files won't work. Projectwise uses a file GUID for file attachments, bypassing PWE means these won't work.

      2. Attaching references won't work. See #1 above, any new attachments won't use the proper GUID and will be broken for other users.

      3. Files checked out by powershell  still go in their dms folder in the working directory. Navigating that by hand is painful.

      4. If the DOT uses a managed workspace it won't work with this workflow.

instead some of the workflow you mention can be handled with the Local Document Organizer. It's under the Tools menu (and a button on the toolbar). It'll show you all your checked out files in one list. You can open any one of them by double clicking. Or you can select multiple files and check them all in, or do an update server copy on them.

for checking out files, if the files are in one folder you can select multiple files, right-click and select check-out. If they're scattered about in different folders it's a bit harder. You could create personal saved searches to help. For example a search where you were the last person to edit the file. Or a search where the file name matches your files. Etc...
