PW DCS and AECOsim Dynamic Views

When creating a rendition using PW SS4, we have noticed that the PDFs generated don't seem to be honouring the dynamic view settings built into AECOsim.  AECOsim creates "building views" where they control specifically unification of components within the parts and families.  When creating extractions, the content is vectorized and thus when creating renditions within PW it is simply reading vector lines in the DGN file.  BUT, when using dynamic views in AECOsim, the content is a model view with display styles and component resymbolization.  We are finding that if PW DCS is using Microstation as an iPlot render engine, it doesn't appear to be recognizing the building-specific settings driven by AECOsim and thus walls are not showing as unified within the generated PDFs.

Is anyone familiar with this and if so does anyone have a workaround (other than manually generating the PDFs)?  Is this a bigger platform issue where AECOsim building view rules need to be recognized in Microstation standard dynamic views, and in OpenPlant Modeler dynamic views?  How will PW publish content generated from the various power applications and ensure it is maintaining the correct intent?

      brent,

In order to get the desired results for building DGN files, you will most likely need to install AECOsim Building Designer (ABD) on your Dynamic Composition Server (DCS) for PDF computer.   The Help describes how DCS for PDF support multiple "processing engines".

From the "Setting Up ProjectWise Dynamic Composition Server for PDF"

Installing the Required CAD Print Engine or Engines

To publish renditions from DGN and DWG source documents, ProjectWise Dynamic Composition Server for PDF requires that you have at least one print engine installed on the ProjectWise Dynamic Composition Server for PDF computer. You can use multiple print engines if needed. When multiple engines are installed, ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer will load the correct engine(s) at runtime to process the source documents. ProjectWise application associations are used to determine which source documents require which print engine.

Which print engine or engines should you install?

ProjectWise Dynamic Composition Server for PDF supports using either MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) or Bentley View V8i (SELECTseries 3) as the default print engine for publishing renditions from DGN and DWG source documents. ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer delivers Bentley View if needed, and installing ProjectWise InterPlot Organizer will automatically install Bentley View by default if neither MicroStation nor Bentley View is detected on the computer. For many organizations, either of these may be the only print engine you need to install.

For other organizations, you may have some DGNs which require special processing and which MicroStation or Bentley View alone cannot adequately publish. In those cases, you will need to install (in addition to MicroStation or Bentley View) the necessary print engines to process those other DGNs.

What are some examples of when you might need additional print engines?

      1. AECOsim Building Designer is the preferred print engine to use for DGN documents authored by Bentley building and architecture applications. If you have not yet adopted AECOsim Building Designer and are still using earlier Bentley architectural products, please contact Bentley technical support for assistance.

      2. Some geo/mapping products may need to be installed, to ensure full fidelity with the screen display.

      3. Other products may need to be installed, to ensure that the output PDFs display all of the property information that would normally display in the source documents.

How can you determine which additional print engines you might needed?

Open a particular DGN in MicroStation. If the graphics appear correct and the Items dialog (File > Item Browser) shows the correct properties, then you can assume you do not need to install that DGN´s source design application on the ProjectWise Dynamic Composition Server for PDF computer, and you can simply use MicroStation or Bentley View as the print engine.

What happens when the required additional print engines are not installed?

In this case, MicroStation or Bentley View will be used to publish renditions from DGNs and DWGs as usual, but some of the renditions may not properly display all of the graphics or all of the property information you are expecting.

      Best Wishes,

      Jeff North

Jeff thank you VERY MUCH!  I have passed this along to our internal PW Admin team.

Will using AECOsim as your graphic engine effect the quality of PDF renditions of drawing created with other Bentley products like InRoads and OpenPlant?

By default, iCS (formerly DCS) should attempt to use the application defined for the document in ProjectWise as the print engine when processing the rendition as long as that application is installed on the iCS server and configured appropriately.

      thank you Dawn

On the other hand, as best I can tell, with Iplot Organizer w/Server do not have this capablity so when mixing MicroStation, AECOsim and Bentley Map authored dgn's there arn't any graphic engine options.
