iCS for PDF now supports pausing and resuming both the overall service and individual iCS for PDF jobs.
Pausing the service immediately prevents new jobs from activating and instructs the dispatchers and processors in the orchestration to idle after finishing their current messages. When the service is paused, the iCS for PDF server may be rebooted, or other maintenance performed without job loss. When the service is resumed, active jobs pick up where they left off. Pausing and resuming the service is only available inside iCS for PDF Administrator using an ODBC or OLE DB direct database connection. It is not available inside iCS for PDF Administrator using a Web database connection.
Active jobs may also be paused individually, preserving their current state in the database and the dispatcher/processor queues, while allowing other active jobs to complete. Jobs may be manually paused and resumed from either iCS for PDF Administrator or ProjectWise Explorer by the job owner or a registered Orchestration Frame Administrator.
In iCS for PDF Administrator, if the user is directly connected to the database, a "Pause Service" command is available in the iCS for PDF browser "Job Definitions" right-click menu. If the service is currently pausing or paused, a "Resume Service" command appears.
The service status is indicated in the title bar of the 'Display Active Jobs' window, and the status of each job is displayed in the 'Status' column and on the icon in the job definitions tree. Note that the various status indicators are not updated instantly; updates may be delayed by a few seconds.
The iCS for PDF Administrator job definition tree icons are:
When the service is running, active jobs are indicated with the green arrow icon and an "Active" status in the Active Jobs monitor.
When the "Pause Service" command is selected, both the service and active job statuses initially change to "Pausing". This status indicates that new jobs are not permitted to start, and dispatchers/processors are finishing their current messages and when done will not pull new messages from their respective queues. When no more messages are being currently processed for a given job, the job status changes to "Paused". Some messages, such as a current rendition in progress, may take a relatively long time to complete.
When all jobs reach paused status, the service status changes from "Pausing" to "Paused". At this point, it is safe to reboot the iCS for PDF server and/or perform other maintenance.
Any attempt to start a job, either from PW Explorer or iCS for PDF Administrator or a scheduled task, when the service is Pausing or Paused, will result in an error.
When the service is resumed, all jobs marked as temporarily paused automatically revert to "Active" and the dispatchers/processors resume pulling messages from their respective queues until the jobs are complete.
An active job may also be manually paused while the service is running, allowing other jobs to proceed. This is done by selecting "Pause" from the job definition right-click menu.
The job initially enters "Pausing" status until all messages currently being processed are completed, then the status changes to "Paused". A manually paused job remains idle until explicitly reactivated by selecting "Resume" in the right-click menu.
In iCS for PDF Administrator, a job that is temporarily pausing or paused due to the service being paused may be manually paused in order to prevent its automatic reactivation when the service is resumed. A manually paused job may only be resumed if the service is running.
In ProjectWise Explorer, if the service is pausing or paused, the job control right-click menu is not displayed in the active jobs window. It is not possible to pause or resume the service from ProjectWise Explorer.
