Unable to open two Word Documents at a time.

    Problem Description

I double click a word document in ProjectWise and it opens in Microsoft Word. Leaving that document open, I go back to ProjectWise and double click another word document, I see it being checked out, but it never opens.   When I close Microsoft Word, neither of the two documents I opened are checked back in and I have to check them in manually.

    Steps to Resolve

    1. Be sure that Projectwise integration is properly installed.   When you open the word document you should see the ProjectWise menu option and ribbon.

    2. Check to see if a user association for Microsoft Word has been created. If it has remove it.

      1. On the client machine, log in to Projectwise Explorer as the user with the problem.
      2. Go to tools, associations, programs.
      3. Change the association view to "user associations".
      4. Scroll down in the applications list to Microsoft Word. Expand it then expand "open".
      5. If there is an association there, right mouse click on it and choose un-associate.  Click Okay.

    3. Check that the Global application setting is correct.  You can check this from the client but you will not be able to change it. To check from the client, Go to tools, associations, programs. Change the association view to "Global associations". Scroll down in the applications list to Microsoft Word.  Expand it then expand "open". It should show Word.Document.PW (followed by the path to winword.exe).

    4. To change The Global Association:

      1. Open PW administrator and log in as an admin
      2. Expand associations, then right click on Microsoft word and choose properties,
      3. Click on the actions tab.
      4. The program class should say Word.Document.PW.
      5. If it does not then highlight open, click modify, then click the browse button.
      6. Click on the advanced tab and type in Word.Document.PW
      7. Make sure “entered text is a program class name” is checked.  Click okay.
    5. There is a Microsoft Word setting that allows the document to open in separate application windows:

      1. Open a Word Document
      2. Go to File > Options > Advanced
      3. Scroll down to the Display section
      4. Check the box for "Show all windows in the Taskbar".
      5. Now each document will open in a separate window, and you can drag each window to a separate monitor.
    6. If all of the above does not solve the problem then try the following: Open a word document via ProjectWise. Then when you go to open the second document hold the shift key while double clicking the file in ProjectWise.
