Troubleshooting ProjectWise Explorer using Process Monitor (ProcMon)

In some cases, you may be asked by Bentley Technical Support to provide a Microsoft Process Monitor (ProcMon) log to troubleshoot ProjectWise or other Bentley product issues. Process Monitor is a free tool from Windows (previously Sysinternals) located on Microsoft's website. The tool monitors and displays in real-time all file system activity of applications running on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It serves multiple purposes and effectively replaces older tools like; FileMon and RegMon; typically used for: system administration, computer forensics, and application debugging.

    Steps to install ProcMon

    1. Follow the link below to download the latest version of Microsoft Process Monitor:
      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/ProcMon

    2. Right click the ProcessMonitor.zip file and click Extract All to extract files to the same folder you are in.
    3. You will now have a ProcessMonitor folder. If you open it, you will see a txt, chm and exe file.

    Steps to using ProcMon

    1. Run the Procmon.exe file.
    2. Click the Capture button to stop the capture.

         3. Click the Clear button to clear everything.

           4. When ready to duplicate an issue, click the Capture button, capturing the Start of any Bentley products needed to reproduce the problem.

          5. Once the problem has occurred and been recorded, click the Capture button to Stop the capture.

         6. NOTES:  It is important to Save and Send the capture in this manner:

    • Save "All Events"
    • Save in "PML" format
    • Zip the PML file and any other data requested
    • If sharing with one individual consider password protecting the Zip to share
    • Upload the file as instructed
    • Lastly, Notify the person you are working with when the log is available to review and optional password used
