Using ProjectWise Authentication Server In Active Directory Domain Model [CS]

Installing and Configuring ProjectWise Authentication Server

Figure 1: ProjectWise Application Server Install Wizard.

Figure 2: Selecting the ProjectWise Authentication Server Service.

    Figure 3

First, we will install ProjectWise Authentication Server on the ProjectWise Application Server. Run through the Install Wizard (Figure 1).
Go to Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>Services. Select the ProjectWise Authentication Server Service. Right click, then go to "Properties" (Figure 2).
Select the second tab, which is named "Log On." Select the toggle "Local System Account" (Figure 3).
Now we need to create a global group on the Windows 2000 domain. For example, you might call this global group "ProjectWise."
Add to this global group those users from the domain that will use ProjectWise. On the ProjectWise Application Server, create a local group. For example, you might call this local group "PW_Local."

Synchronizing User Groups with ProjectWise Authentication Server

Add the global group from the domain to the local group on the ProjectWise Application Server.

    Log in to ProjectWise Administrator.

Expand the Windows NT Security System.

Highlight "Authentication Server," right click, and then go to "Properties."

In the server dialog screen you will see where it states "Synchronize accounts of this datasource on this computer." Specify the ProjectWise Application server name.

There are two ways to do this:

    • Use the UNC naming convention file://%25projectwiseservername%25/
    • Use the Browse button and navigate to the ProjectWise Application server name in Network Neighborhood. Type in the ProjectWise Administrator username and password in the fields under "Use this ProjectWise account." Apply changes.

Figure 4: Specifying your ProjectWise Application Server name.
Expand the Synchronized Account. Highlight "User Groups," right click, and go to "New Synchronized Group." The wizard will appear. Click "Next." Select the radio button "Use local computer."

The next dialog screen asks what domain you want to use to bring in accounts. Select the local computer name with the local group. Choose the local group you created in Step 5. Click "Next," then "Finish."

You should now see the local group listed in the ProjectWise Administrator> Windows NT Security System> Authentication Server>Synchronized Accounts>User Groups.

Figure 5: Your local group should appear.
Highlight "Authentication Server" and right click the toggle called "Synchronize Accounts." A dialog box will pop up asking "Do you want to synchronize windows NT accounts now?" Select "Yes." This will bring in all user accounts that were in the domain global group to reside in the ProjectWise local group.

In the Event Viewer, under Application Log, it will show exactly how many users were brought into ProjectWise. Once domain user accounts have been successfully imported into ProjectWise, users can log in into ProjectWise using their domain user accounts.

Logging into ProjectWise with Authenticated Account

When logging into ProjectWise as a domain user, use this format: %domain name%\%username% and then the user password (Example: Bentley\Johndoe).

The ProjectWise Authentication Server (PAS) allows you to utilize your Windows NT or 2000 user domain accounts as your user accounts within ProjectWise. Once the ProjectWise Authentication Server synchronizes the selected domain user accounts with your datasource, your ProjectWise users will be able to log into that datasource using their Windows account username and password. This article outlines how to set up the ProjectWise Authentication Server to synchronize accounts in a Windows Active Directory Domain Model.
