    Move indexing to another drive

      Product(s): ProjectWise V8 XM Edition
      Version(s): 08.09.04.00
      Area:  Index Server
Original Author: Bentley Technical Support Group

    Problem Description

Client wants to know how to move indexing onto another drive (not Server) in XM?

    Solution

    Stop the Microsoft Indexing service
Stop the ProjectWise Orchestration Framework service From Windows Explorer, create a folder for the new location of the index files (proxy and catalog)

Open Computer Management, drill down to Services and Applications> Indexing Service

Under the bentley_index item, add a new directory pointing to your new location

From Windows Explorer, copy entire contents of old index location, to newly created index location. Be sure to get all subfolders, including the hidden folder named catalog.wci. By default the old index location is>c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley\index-storage

From Computer Management, remove (delete) the old location from the index. This does not delete the folder/files. It only removes it from the index.
Delete/archive the files from the old index location now, or at your convenience That much was covered in the existing documentation. Here is the part that was missing:

Open REGEDIT, and browse to> HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex\Catalogs\bentley_index
Edit the "Location" key and change the value to point to your new index location. This is the part that resets the location for the hidden folder catalog database. If this step is not done, the catalog will be maintained in the old location, even though the proxy files are in the new location.

    Close REGEDIT

You will have copied the actual catalog hidden folder in the earlier step (Part 1, Step 6) above. But if you didn't, then do so now.
    Restart the Microsoft Indexing Service
Restart the ProjectWise Orchestration framework service

That's it. Now, you will likely see some CPU activity while the Indexing service checks the catalog database integrity, and I don't think this can be avoided. It will not be near as taxing as re-indexing everything because that would involve:

Copying out all files from storage location(s) generating proxy files for all copied out documents Running MicroStation to process all DGN/DWG's to generate proxy files then adding them to the FT catalog
