Word or Excel opens as a blank document or error 50002 or 112173

    Error or Warning Message

    50002

Cannot start application for the specified document.  Check your program associations. Invalid parameter passed to API function.

    112173

Cannot start application for the specified document.  Check your program associations.  A client's attempt to establish a conversation failed.

    Explanation

ProjectWise is attempting to open the document in an integrated session, however something is broken with the integration

Option 1 Verify integration is installed and working

    1. Tools-associations-programs-user associations
    2. Right click-unassociate any open actions for the application having the issue.  This will default to the appropriate global association (Word.Document.PW or Excel.Document.PW)

    3. In control panel- programs and features, run a modify on ProjectWise Explorer.  Install iDesktop integration for Office products
    4. Check that the add-in is enabled http://communities.bentley.com/products/projectwise/content_management/b/weblog/archive/2013/04/08/error-message-cannot-start-application-for-the-specified-document-check-your-program-associations.aspx
    5. If this selection doesn’t “stick” (if you close out and go back in, and the add-in shows as disabled again) , then proceed to the registry options below

Option 2 Last resort, if Option 1 does not fix the issue

NOTE: It is highly recommended to use this method as a last resort since disabling “ALL” add-ins can have adverse affects on application stability and security. Please check with your system administrator or IT department for proper direction first

    1. Run regedit.exe and browse to the appropriate product and version

    ex: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Resiliency\DisabledItem

          2.  First identify each addin by interactively examining each key name. e.g. "432189BE". By double-clicking the    item you should see a readable path to the location of each add-in. Carefully note the registry key name of each
    ProjectWise add-in for removal.

          3. Manually verifying, backing up, and deleting the ProjectWise add-in key found in step 2
