Attributes on custom templates are not working as expected

      Product(s): ProjectWise Explorer Client
      Version(s): 08.11.XX.XX
Original Author: Bentley Technical Support Group

    Problem

This customer is experiencing some weird behavior with the latest release of ProjectWise Transmaittals V8i version 08.11.07.03.  Attributes on custom templates are not working as expected.  The variables in the custom templates do not get populated with values
from ProjectWise.  The customer has tried recreating the template but this has not resolved the issues.  One try some attributes
dail to populate, make changes to the template then those attributes will populate but others in the template will not populate. Customer is using PWIS 8.11.7.133, PWE 8.11.7.133.  Below is some information from the customer.

    1.  FW Vendor Data.aam: The attributes of the environment FW_Vendor_Data
    2. Vendor Data Template - NOT WORK.rft: the custom transmittal template (not working)
    3. Vendor Data Template - WORK.rtf: the custom transmittal template (working)
    4. Testing for Vendor Data Transmittal - NOT WORKING.rtf: an example of failed transmittal issue using the NOT WORK template
    5. Testing for Vendor Data Transmittal - WORKING.rft: the example of successful transmittal issue using the WORK template.

On the surface both WORK and NOT WORK templates look the same. I practically play around with the NOT WORK template and magically it comes up working. I have no clue how or why.  It's frustrated to keep throwing darts and to hope that they stick, :).

Any light on the problem will help us significantly.  Even a work-around solution is really helpful.

    Solution

We took following steps in order to reproduce and fix the issue –
    1. Transmittal templates were checked and issue of “Vendor Data Template - NOT WORK.rtf” was observed.
    2. The tags VD #: <@Vendor_Doc_ID>, BP DOC #:<@BP_Doc_Number>, REV. <@Vendor_Rev_No> from the “Vendor Data Template - NOT WORK.rtf” were removed.
    3. The removed tags were pasted into a “notepad” and then copied back to the “Vendor Data Template - NOT WORK.rtf” template and save it.
    4. The changed “Vendor Data Template - NOT WORK.rtf” now works fine.
    5. I created a new template (TransmittalTemplateForFosterWheeler.rtf) having similar tags as the customer supplied template. While creating the template I took following steps –
    a. The table structure was created first without any tags Or text data.
    b. The tags and labels were first created inside a notepad application.
    c. The tags were placed inside the desired cell in the table.
    d. Start and end to mark the block with “@@@” was similarly created in the notepad first and then pasted to the template file.
    6. Find the attached “TransmittalTemplateForFosterWheeler.rtf” template.

The reason for the problem is due to the fact that latest Microsoft word saves RTF file with additional format information due to which the tags lose their characteristic “simple” format and additional information is placed while saving the template. The transmittal “understands” only simple tags and that results into “N/A” instead of correct ProjectWise attribute information in the transmittal note.

If we avoid above situation by following template creation method given (step 5) above then I guess template should give correct result. Even after taking precaution if some tags are not working then “Cut and paste” to notepad and again place them at original location in the template.
