We have got a situation where we have ended up with very long position prefixes on our groups and single parts. eg:
the reasoning for this is that we very large jobs with many areas being progressed and constructed at different times. This system of numbering allows us to marry the position number with the original engineering model and engineering drawings.
We can handle this fine on the single part and group drawings because we are using detail centre express to create single items per sheet so there is plenty or room but it is an issue on marking plans due it being so long.
we currently use part family to prefix all the members and parts so beams for example would be prefixed with "311-S2-010-B-" stairs with "311-S2-010-S-" etc.
is there a way on the marking plan to get the position flags to drop the "311-S2-010-" so that we are just left with B-100 or S-120 etc.
We are currently using Autocad2012 with Prosteel SS4 but are looking to move to Autocad 2014 and Prosteel SS6 by the end of the year
Hi mmcenall,
I am not sure of a way to achieve this through ProSteel.
Is there any flexibility with the numbering convention? For example... can "311-S2-010-B-100" become "311-S2-010-B100"? Thats would make it pretty easy to accomplish with part family prefixes.
Otherwise it can be done with a LISP routine. Are the position numbers always the same length?

Excuse me lamensters, i just want to ask a relative issue. If I assigned some family to parts, like B- for beams, C- for columns...and then I make the position sevral times for getting different prefix, like B-1,B-2,B-3,... C-1,C-2,C-3...(select diferent parts every time) If the program can see different between B-1 and C-1? I mean prefix is a valid word or not when program compare parts? Thanks.
Hi Panda,
If I understand your question correctly, the answer is depends on your positioning settings. It is possible to have ProSteel recognise Part Families while it's performing its position comparison.
Hope that helps.
Thanks lamensterms. I mean Prosteel can recognise part family and it will give me a continual result as C-1, C-2, B-3, C-4, B-5 after conparing them by default. But if I want like: C-1, C-2, C-3,...B-1, B-2, B-3, ....I need power select the parts that have same part family at first, and then do positioning, right?
Hi lamensterms
There is some flexibility with the system and what you are proposing would be acceptable as long as we have enough flexibility to have many different family's (for exaample A for columns B for beams C for bracing S for stairs etc)
The position numbers will be the same length and i hadn't thought about a lisp but that should work. I might have a look into that if i cant find any other solution.
