When cutting a section view some elements display but beams are not, they display as dots/lines and not a true cut face (as can be seen in yellow on image). Is there a setting to remedy this?

Via Dynamic View or detail Center?Could you please share your model so that we can investigate this and can give you the solution?There are two options for sharing your model files on BE Communities. If you would like the files to be visible to other members, compress the files into a zip file and upload them as an attachment via insert. If your data is confidential, you can follow the instructions in the link below to send it to us via Bentley Sharefile. Files uploaded to Sharefile can only be viewed by Bentley.

A few things to try.
First one would be to cache your view
I would also look at your display styles in particular the display style used for the cut plane.
