(Element Modification Tool) PolyCut by Polygon in ProStructures Connect Edition not working properly

In the first screenshot, you will see that I am attempting to cut an opening into the top flange of the beam, using the Polycut as shown.  I only want to cut the top flange.  In the second screenshot, this shows the Shape Properties, and the cut is obviously not shown graphically.  The profile of the cut I want, is shown in orange, whereas the cut profile according to the Shape Properties is shown in red, but the cut is not evident or shown correctly.  Of note: When I cut the part using the "Complete" setting in the POSITION box, it works just fine...but I don't want to cut the full beam, just the top flange!

Current version: ProStructures Connect Edition Update 5 - Version 10.05.01.11

I have used this tool hundreds of times in ProSteel SS10 and older versions, without any issue.  This tool is much faster than using Notches to do the same thing.  I have checked every conceivable setting, config variable and attributes setting and cannot seem to find the fix.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hello Frank DeRose,

Thanks for posting this query in Bentley Community Forum.

As far as I understood, you just want to cut the top flange. In that case you have two possibilities.

    1. Either you can use Polycut in modify tool, but since you want to cut only the top flange you need to select the option "Position" as Upper Half.

    2. Or you can use Notch tool where after selecting the point you have the option to provide Width, Height and Depth and according to your input it will create Notch for you and this is applicable for any elements irrespective element type.

I have also attached a video to explain this. Hope this will help you. Looking forward to your update.

  • I know how to use the tool, as I have been working with ProStructures/ProSteel since Bentley first introduced it several years ago. I have close to 20 years of 3D modelling experience with many of Bentley's programs, including Structural Modeler, ProSteel, STAAD, ProStructures, OpenPlant AEOCSIM and others, not to mention Catia, PRO-E, Solidworks. Civil 3D and a half dozen other AutoCad programs I have used over the years too.

The issue is not a matter of training to use the tool, the issue is that the tool is not working correctly.  My feeling is that there is a "bug" in the tool.  I have asked my other colleagues, and they are having the same issue, so I am reaching out to the Bentley Communities to see if this issue is known or unknown, and if everyone else isn't having the issue, then maybe we need to do a re-install of the software.  If there are others who are having the same issue, then it's possible this is a "bug" that Bentley needs to address and fix.

Thank you for your reply, and the assistance...but this is not the answer I am looking for at this time.

  • Hi Frank

Just out of interest. What are your precision settings? Are you working outside the Solids working area (swa)?

  • hi dominic,

yes I am working well within the limits of the Solids Working Area.  In the model used for this post, I am roughly 300 feet in any direction from 0,0,0.  Precision settings are set via the seed file, and the seed file has not changed or been modified since setup.
