Improved Look and Feel:
One goal for the S4 release of ProSteel for MicroStation was to make it a better MicroStation application—for the product to look and feel more like MicroStation users expect. This is a description of the changes in ProSteel for MicroStation commands in SELECTseries 4 that are part of achieving that goal.
Workflow
The command workflows in the S1 version of ProSteel for MicroStation frequently ask for key-ins as an alternative or enhancement to a left/data button or identification of an object—an AutoCAD-style setup. Key-in input is not recognized in S1, but the product works, for the most part, because the common cases handle a right/reset button as if the key-in alternative were chosen.
We are updating all steps in workflows that ask for key-ins in ProSteel for MicroStation. The more important and frequently used commands are being done first.

Picking One Object
When the user is asked to pick an object in the S1 version of ProSteel for MicroStation, he must first isolate the object so the data point he enters identifies only that object.
Standard MicroStation single element selection behavior is implemented in S4.
To fit within the command workflows, two additions were made to the standard MicroStation behavior.
1. If a data button is entered that isn’t over an element and isn’t accepting a selection, the selection process ends without picking an object.
2. If a reset button is entered that isn’t rejecting a selection, the selection process ends and the reset is used to back up a step in the workflow.
Selecting Many Objects
A MicroStation tool that can work on many objects at a time is typically set up expecting that the selection set or fence be defined before starting the tool. Setting up a selection set before starting a S1 version ProSteel for MicroStation command works if the step to select the objects is the first one. If the select-objects step is later, however, the selection set has been cleared and the user needs to pick the objects one-by-one (and it can be very tedious).
Newer multi-pick and drag selection capabilities were found (in the MicroStation API and used by the MicroStation Move, Copy, Rotate, Scale, and Mirror tools) and implemented in S4 for steps in workflows that may select many objects.
To select many elements individually:
To select many elements using drag selection:
1. Press and hold the data button down when the cursor is not over an element.
2. Move the cursor from left-to-right to select the elements within the selection box.
Move the cursor from right-to-left to select the elements within and overlapping the selection box. Tap the Shift key to reverse the inside vs. overlap meaning.
Tap the Alt key to switch from a bounding box to a line and select the elements that overlap the line.
3. Release the data button.
4. Enter a data button (click) to accept the contents.
The procedures can be combined to define a group; just hold down the Ctrl key when selecting the additional elements. Selecting an element a second time in either procedure unselects the element.
Similar to picking one element, when the command workflow is looking for a particular type of object, only that type of object can/will be selected.
To fit within the command workflows, if a reset button is entered that doesn’t reject a selection, the selection process ends without a selection.
Fence Mode
In S1, if the objects are selected with a fence (instead of a selection set or by picking), the objects within and overlapping the fence are selected. In S4, that was updated to respect the Inside vs. Overlap Fence Mode.
