Point Cloud data

Question

Hi, 
 I can reference in point cloud data using the Point cloud tool in Microstation v8i, but I would like to import the xyz data directly into a DGN file. 
 I have converted the *POD into a xyz Ascii text file and tried to import it using the XYZ text import tool but I get an error message. 
 Basically I would like the data in a DGN, so that I can create a surface using Bentley Rail. 
 
 The version of Microstation I am using is 08.11.09.932

Hi Matt, You did not specify what error message you get during import or what settings you have used for this. Please review this wiki article communities.bentley.com/.../26009.how-to-import-coordinates-xyz-and-their-respective-labels-or-text Check if for the import, you have selected Point elements and order xyz as explained there and also make sure that your file has x, y and z values. I recall some issues when importing big files. Try to divide the file in two or three smaller files to import and let us know if you still have issues.

The best workflow is to create DTM from the point cloud (.pod) directly as Alistair said. IN Rail track SS2 (08.11.07.xxx) it is using Data Acquisition tools from the task bar. In Rail Track SS4 (08.11.09.xxx) it is from the civil tools task, Terrain Model>Create Terrain Model from point clouds. 
 The workflow is almost the same in SS2 and SS4 
 
 Attach point cloud: lot of different formats but the result will be pod file. Clip if necessary 
 Create Terrain Model from Point Clouds: use filters to reduce the number of points if necessary 
 If you need the DTM just export the terrain model as DTM, available when clicking on the TM from the toolbar or from the task bar
