ORD - Horizontal Regression Questions

(I originally posted this in the EAP forum, but I'm re-posting it here as I'm aware the other forum is now inactive.)

I have a few queries about the horizontal regression tool in OpenRail Designer (10.03.00.41) -

  • It would be useful to see the regression points in a list view, like the BRT 'Edit/Review Regression Points' tool. Are there any plans to add this?
  • Can you assign a weight to regression points?
  • Can you exclude some regression points from your selection?  (e.g. in BRT you can change a point so that it is 'excluded from analysis')
  • In the curvature diagram, displaying a symbol (e.g. a cross) at each regression point would make the points a bit easier to distinguish.
  • Is it possible to show point names on the curvature diagram?
  • Can you plot the existing cant on the curvature diagram, like in BRT?
  • Can we tweak the radius before accepting a regressed curve? For instance, rather than accepting R=1501.215m, in BRT we might overwrite the radius to a round figure, R=1500m.
  • Can you display the slues at each regression point in the plan view?

  • Let me try to answer them;

    • It would be useful to see the regression points in a list view, like the BRT 'Edit/Review Regression Points' tool. Are there any plans to add this?
      • You can find the list of points in the Project Explorer, OpenRail Model -> Points tab.
    • Can you assign a weight to regression points?
      • This is not implemented. Can you provide some more information about the use case for this? I can imagine platform points or existing bridge have higher weight but in practice never used it.
    • Can you exclude some regression points from your selection?  (e.g. in BRT you can change a point so that it is 'excluded from analysis')
      •  You can remove points by removing them from the drawing (or moving them to a different level and hide).
    • In the curvature diagram, displaying a symbol (e.g. a cross) at each regression point would make the points a bit easier to distinguish.
    • Is it possible to show point names on the curvature diagram?
      • Both of these are noted, will investigate how we can do them.
    • Can you plot the existing cant on the curvature diagram, like in BRT?
      • This is added for the next update.
    • Can we tweak the radius before accepting a regressed curve? For instance, rather than accepting R=1501.215m, in BRT we might overwrite the radius to a round figure, R=1500m.
      • Currently you can do that after creating the geometry. When you create the final geometry with adding the spirals, you can select to add horizontal rules. If you chose that you will have the radius manipulators on the created elements to change radius. Implementing this into the tool may be problematic,as regression is now dynamic and any change in the regression selection will update the created element. Maybe we can have a rounding option instead.
    • Can you display the slues at each regression point in the plan view?
      • This is in the backlog and will be implemented with the updates. Slue display will also be dynamic, so you will be able to see it while adding the points to analysis.

  • Kivanc, I have some questions on your response to Paul Bennett above.

    • You can find the list of points in the Project Explorer, OpenRail Model -> Points tab.

I have a couple of hundred points, but only 9 are shown.  Why?  If I rename a point in Properties then is gets excludes from the regression points displayed in plan.  Is there a way to rename regression points easily?

    • Can you assign a weight to regression points?

I agree with Paul this is important.

    •  You can remove points by removing them from the drawing (or moving them to a different level and hide).

This is just horrible.  Has there been a change in ORD (10.09.00.91) ?

    • In the curvature diagram, displaying a symbol (e.g. a cross) at each regression point would make the points a bit easier to distinguish.

    Would be useful.

I agree with Paul's suggestion.  After regressing an Arc I cancel the regression and place the arc manually using geometry tools.  Not the smartest way.  I don't understand your workflow - once I create the final geometry can one remove a rule on one specific arc only.  Then change arc radius.  Will that work?

This is now working, however, I don't like the style it isn't very readable.  Can I change the orientation to be parallel to alignment?  Can the slew units be change to mm?  Surely, 40 is easier to interpret (visually) than 0.040m. I've trawled through the styles be cannot find this - any guidance?

Can the regression point style be change to say a cell?
