Going though some job applications for my first job out of college. I mostly have experience in Transportation. I came upon this application that had the title of "Civil Designer". Ive seen roadway engineer but not Civil Designer. What do Civil Designers do? ( The job description is very vague).
Titles don't always have standard meaning across the industry. Civil Designer sounds akin to Project Engineer which is another meaningless title for entry-level engineers. It could be worse, I've seen entry level architects with the title Architect-In-Training. appvalley tutuapp tweakbox
It can be a wide range. Generally it’s a drafter or CAD technician who is experienced and relied on to make design decisions. Depending on the role and their capabilities they could practically be an engineer but does not have at least a BSCE or their PE.
Thanks!
One definition of a civil engineer is someone who is dealing with infrastructure and construction assets: design, construction, operation and renewal.
I would say that a civil designer is first limited to design then probably at lower level than a civil engineer. But a civil designer could do road, rail, site, waterway,
As a "Civil Designer" hopefully I can provide some clarity here. The title is generally used for people that design civil elements but do not hold the local Engineering Licence/Accreditation to stamp drawings. I always work with engineers to complete a project where they check my work and provide guidance, but I will be the person creating alignments and designing layouts of sites, roadways, railways, etc.
I know that where I live (Ontario, Canada) the Professional Engineering association does not allow anyone without the professional engineering licence to have engineer in their title, unless it is the title of Engineer in Training (EIT).
For me, there's not much similarity between product design engineering and civil engineering (which could later give a chance to transfer from one to another). I know that there're many paid Civil CAD Designer internships in Arizona this year though.
