Does Open Rail designer compatible with Revit?
May I know what are the Challanges?

  • The immediate answer is NO.

However the immediate question is: what do you mean by compatible ?

OpenRail Designer is a software to deal with track design: long, irregular, curves (2D+2D=3D), ... You can expand capabilities with Generative Components (parametric design).

Revit is a software to deal with architecture: small, regular, mostly linear, mathematical curves, ... You can expand capabilities with Dynamo (parametric design).

Could you create a building with properties attached to objects in OpenRail ? Yes you can but you must be be expert of 3D modelling and almost no intelligence in the building.

Could you create a track with earthworks in Revit ? I can't answer this question but I would say no from my knowledge of Revit and feedback.

Could you see Revit model and access object properties in OpenRail ? Yes. Best is to export Revit model as i.dgn using the free plugin in Revit. Other solution: IFC.
You will be able to see the 3D model, get the model in cross sections, long sections, plan.

Could you see OpenRail model and access object properties in Revit ? Not sure on how Revit deals with DGN or i.dgn. Other solution: IFC with limitations from OpenRail at the moment. 2020-R1 gives more capabilities. But no IFC for insfrastrucure ready to support all rail modelling.

Our strategy withing Bentley is to let users chose the authoring tool and facilitate the coordination of all models at single place.

It is the iTwin services that are coming live progressively. DGN, IFC, RVT, DWG, ... will be synchronised to a single model  (imodel) users can access through web services.
Uses can review in a web viewers, comments, analyze, .check differences between versions, ...

I would like to ask if civil contractor gives us as a i.dgn , Could we attached it in our open Rail ?

  • And, for coordination if all parties that involve in projects are using Naviswork.
In this case we may need to export our Open Rail model to IFC ?
In 2020R1 Ifc 4 or China Railway IFC would be include?

    Thank you.

  • IFC 4 is for alignments and is included.

There is IFC export to export corridor meshes with items.

I don't know much about availability of China Railway IFC. I will ask.

What about Naviswork ability to import imodel, or DGN with items ?

  • Thank you for the replies.
For the Naviswork I need to check also.
It means if Naviswork can Import i.model , it could be use ?
