I encounter odd behavior sometimes when dropping the complex status of a complex element of horizontal geometry. Unfortunately, I cannot recreate the issue in a repeatable manner. When I drop the complex status of an element, the feature definition of the individual elements disappears. Furthermore, when I go to the properties of an element I cannot reassign a feature definition because the feature definition portion of the properties has disappeared. Does anyone have any idea as to why this happens and how to correct or prevent it?
It could be that when you designed the elements that make the complex you didn't assign a feature definition. So when you drop you don't have any feature definition.
The feature definition properties (the properties, not the value) are not always assigned automatically. If the feature name is empty and there is no feature definition name, then the properties are not assigned to the elements.
But you can assign feature definition at any time using Geometry>Standards>Set Feature definition.

When I complexed the elements they did have a feature definition. Then when I dropped their complex status the feature definition is lost. This is despite the fact that the same feature definition is always selected in the Feature Definitions Toolbar and the "Use Active Feature Definition" is ON. When the feature definition is lost in this manner, the feature definition property in the properties dialog also disappears. Therefore, a feature definition cannot be assigned through the properties dialog anymore. However, using the Geometry → Standards → Set Feature Definition does work in assigning a feature definition again. Thank you for the help!
That's not normal behavior. I just tested again in 2021 R1 (10.10.01.03)
I still have Matchline set for all the elements.
I get the same behavior that you describe if I follow your example. I will post an example when I happen to encounter the issue again. It is unfortunately spurious in nature and I cannot seem to recreate the issue on demand.
