MX with linemode inputs in Rail

Hello,

Does anyone use an MX with input files for Rail designing? I'm using it for Road designing (carriageways, earthworks, pavement, long sections, cross sections etc.). Could it be so effective tool in Rails? Linemode loses a lot of functionality while alignment has non-tangential connections (such a railway junctions) - is there any smart solution for only tangential alignment?

Best regards

  • Hello,

You are right that linemode and some functions in MX do not apply in non tangential mode. The rail product within Bentley products is now bentley Rail Track. It does not provide the linemode - which is still a big strength in MX - but it does offer a good flexibility. The linemode is less required because of the Roadway designer that handles much of what you can do in an input file (carriageway/track, earthworks, etc.).

The roadway designer is dynamically linked to the geometry so that you don't have to run an input file but the changes to the geometry automatically apply to the corridor. Note that the Roadway Designer is now included in MX V8i Select Series 2 so you may have already seen it.

  • Hello,

I've seen it and the idea fix is very similar to Corridor in Autodesk Civil 3D and I am afraid of stability and functionality in very long and complicated projects. In line mode I am able to sculpture almost every kind of geometry also in pave. Additionally, in MX my project is nothing more and nothing less then 100% stable TXT file. Even in case of project crash I lost nothing :)

What is Your suggestion: we have licenses and abilities for MX - could they both be suited to work for Rails or is it "salto mortale" :)

  • The Roadway designer is a proven technology so has been and can be applied for long and complicated projects. Anyway, there is no equivalent to MX linemode who gives a strong way to design and an accurate history on how and why things have been done. But it is not always that easy to create all using linemode.

So regarding the future MX will still be there and will still apply for all kind of project. Nevertherless, I don't think much enhancements will be agreed if they concern only rail design but I don't have any authority in that area.

We should also condider that Bentley Rail Track  is part of our rail solution deeply integrated with ProjectWIse, Overheadline, and so on to provide a consistent rail solution that will continue to evolve.
