Video-Create Regression Line from Rails (From Reference)

OpenRail Designer 2021 R1 (10.10.01.03)

A usual workflow is to get rails as linestring in a CAD file (dwg or dgn).
If you have tried to create rails from such linestring directly from the reference you may have noticed an issue: number of points, points not matching the survey location.
There is a defect already logged: Defect 1133103:Create Regression Line from rails from reference is creating many additional regression points incorrectly

Solution 1

  1. Before creating the regression line from rail, change the linear stroking value.
From File>Settings>Configuration>Configuration Variables, search "stroking" and edit the variable.

Set the value to a number greater than the minimum distance between the survey points.
  2. Create the regression line from rails
  3. Delete the variable
Don't be afraid, you only delete its setting from your personal file settings

Solution 2 (if 1 doesn't work)

Workflow is easy and not time consuming. I would say that it is not an additional step because you will often, if not always, need the existing rails for annotation purpose.
This is the case when you annotate the existing cant on profile. You annotate the elevation difference between existing left and right rails.

So the typical workflow when working from a reference should be:

  1. Reference the file in the 2D Model
  2. Create 2D from 3D (from Model Detailing ribbon) and pick the rails from the reference.
  3. Create regression line from the 2 features you just created. Pick left and right depending on the direction you want to get for the regression line.

Note that no action was performed in the 3D model. Everything done in the 2D model.
