Undergraduate modeling 5 story structure in RAM Structural System

Hello all,

I'm an undergraduate modeling a 5 story building in RAM Structural System for a structure class. I have several basic issues:

1. Load inputs: Snow = 30 psf, LL = 100 psf, DL = 3000 kips

QUESTION: Do I differ the loading between Floors and the Roof? What is the order of computer commands I use to access the appropriate screens to input these?

2. Building is being modeled as if it exists in Sacremento, CA. ASCE-07 is the code being used. What screens do I use to input loads for Wind and Seismic loads?

3. I want to create X-bracing at four different locations in the structure, on all floors. What commands do this?

4. After the bracing is created, I'd like to change the supporting columns to pin connections. What commands do this?

5. I'm using USGS for Spectral Response Acceleration Parameter values. Can these be entered into the RAM model?

For all questions, an answer would be a sequence of commands I enter to access the appropriate screens. Thank you for your help.

  • Daniel, the answers to your questions are more involved than can be accommodated here, but I recommend that you look at the Tutorial Manual. It demonstrates most if not all of this. In short, Gravity loads are defined and assigned in the RAM Modeler, and Roof loads and Floor loads are explicitly identified as such. Braces are modeled in Elevation view in the Modeler. Member fixity is assigned in the Modeler but can also be modified in RAM Frame. ASCE 7 Wind and Seismic loads can be automatically generated by putting in the appropriate parameters, in the RAM Frame Loads - Load Cases command. ASCE 7 Response Spectra curve is explicitly implemented in RAM Frame Loads - Load Cases, but you can also create files representing any RSA curve that you desire and invoke that; the format of that file is described in Section 7.18 of the RAM Manager manual, and the file needs to be put in the RAM Tables directory.
