modeling a portal frame in staad

Hi Guys,

As per attached, I would like to ask for any idea or suggestion how to model in Staad this particular steel framing.

This was submitted by our sub contractor specializing in steel fabrication.

A steel member(labeled 'Portal Frame Column) is attached to a steel column (labeled 'Rigid Frame) by a series of bolts to make it stiffer.

Assume that the full frame is cut at the middle thus showing the section as attached.

Regards,

Nicolas

  • From the sketch shown on page 8 of the PDF you attached, it seems that the load flow is from the "portal frame rafter" (PRF) to the "portal frame column" (PRC) to the "rigid frame" (RF) through the "stitch bolts" (SB).

You could model the PRC and the RF as a series of vertical segments with the breaks occurring at the elevation of each SB. Use the RIGID type of master slave links to rigidly connect the segments of the PRC to those of the RF. So, each SB is mathematically represented through a rigid link.
