LIMCON Design Using the EC3

Greetings,

Regarding Limcon V3.63.1.16, designing of moment end plate using Euro Code 3, Limcon is referring to the following while performing some of the required checks.

  • AS 4100, code and design guide 12.
  • AISC 360-10, design guides 4 and 16

The checks where AS 4100 & AISC 360-10 references are used:

CHECK 5 - Bolts in Shear:

CHECK 6 - End Plate in Bending:

CHECK 7 - End Plate in Shear:

CHECK 10/16 - Unstiffened Column Flange Bending at Beam Tension Flange:

CHECK 14 - Unstiffened Column Web Buckling at Beam Compression Flange:

CHECK 22A - Stiffened Column Flange Bending at Beam Tension Flange:

CHECK 23 - Transverse Stiffeners at Beam Compression Flange:

Please advise why these references are used instead of EC3; since it resulted in deferent nominal connection strength compared to values of EC3

Sincerely,

Ahmed Elgabarty

  • Limcon configured for EC3 does not make reference to AS 4100 or AISC 360-10. However, it does make reference to the ASI and AISC design guides mentioned above because it uses the AISC design model for this connection type. Design codes such as EC3 generally do not contain detailed design models for connections. Limcon uses the AISC design model for bolted moment end plates.

RAM Connection 11 (coming out soon) configured for EC3 uses the design model in the BCSA/SCI publication P398.

  • Does Ram Connection perform all the checks of BCSA for all types of connection listed there including column bases

  • The two primary standards for Europe in Ram Connection are

    BS 5950-2000 (British standard)
    EN 1993-2005 (Europe standard)

The BS 5950 code does incorporate BCSA, and column Base Plates are included. Here are the references from the manual:

    For BS 5950-00 design code:

    For EN 1993-2005 design code:

    • EN 1993-1-1 (2005) Eurocode 3. Code for design of steel structures: General rules and rules for buildings.
    • EN 1993-1-8 (2005) Eurocode 3. Code for design of steel structures: Design of joints.
    • BS EN 1993-1-8 (2005). Incorporating Corrigenda December 2005, September 2006, July 2009 and August 2010. Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures – Part 1-8: Design of joints.
    • NA to BS EN 1993-1-8:2005. UK National Annex to Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures. Part 1-8: Design of joints.
    • prEN 1992-4 (2013) Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures – Part 4: Design of fastenings for use in concrete.

  • And Limcon (BS/Euro module) does not perform calculations as per BCSA, as observed by the thread originator Mr Ahmed Elgabarty.
