RAM RC Column Design - link spacing

I'm currently designing a multi-storey RC frame in RAM Concrete and I've noticed a puzzling aspect of how RAM spaces the shear links if using UK codes.

I have for aesthetic reasons rectangular columns with the width in the order of 250mm - 350mm  with depths of columns raging from 450mm, up 1200mm. I've noticed that RAM has spaced the links for the column widths as follows;

250mm - links spaced at 125mm vertical centres

300mm - links are spaced at 175mm vertical centres

450mm - links are spaced at 275mm vertical centres

I've looked in the IStructE Standard Method Detailing of Concrete 3rd Edition and on page 86 the maximum spacing of links are limited to 20 times of the main reinforcement, or the lesser dimension of the column, or 400mm.  It does go on to say the max spacing is to be reduced by a factor of 0.6 in sections within a distance equal to the larger column dimension above and below the slab.

I can't find a way to increase the spacing of the links manually and it looks like an excessive ammount of shear reinforcement.

Has anyone come across this?
