Composite section

I created a composite section which consists of the following two parts,

1. ASTM W 10x100: Steel

2. Plate (width 14", thickness=1") : Concrete

when i try to export this into STAAD.Pro as a General Section, i get the "Invalid data warning" as shown in the attachment.

Question: How to deal with this ? Does this mean that i cannot create a composite section in section wizard ?

  • It is work well in my PC. Did it not worked in other case?
  • Thank you very much xingmin.li.

However i tried this in both 00.20.999 and 20.07..11.45 versions of section wizard using the attached procedure. Still it shows the "invalid data warning".

Is there anything that i miss in the procedure  ?

  • Sorry, I ignored the plate material is concrete. The Issue also exist in my PC.
    I will check it.
  • The screenshot shows that 3 terms are turning out to be negative values - PZ, PY and HSS. And, IX too seems to have taken on an absurdly large value. We need to look into why that is happening.

If you are concerned only about an analysis and do not intend to a steel design this section, you can set all those terms to a small positive value. Ideally, IX should have a more realistic value since it affects torsional stiffness. If torsion is released on the member, the value of IX doesn't matter.

Alternatively, you can export it to a PRISMATIC section instead of GENERAL, and chances are, these errors can be avoided.
