In RAM FRAME, I have a SCBF (cross brace). Cross Brace members are connected to each other at mid-point when they intersect so I want to set the unbraced length in strong axis to half of the total length. I cannot find a way to do that so I modified K=0.5 strong axis instead. Also I want to override the length of the brace member. Currently, RAM seems to calculated it from work point to work point. However, the actual length of brace member is between hinge zone of gusset which can be up to 4 ft different than work point to work point length. How can i alter that? Should i just calculated the % different between actual length and RAM calculated length then change the K factor instead again?
Are you using an old version or design code? You can assign brace unbraced length in Ram Frame - Steel mode - using Assign - Braces - Unbraced Length... for most codes.
Seth,
I am using this command to assign an unbraced length of 1 foot for axial in the minor axis. However, after I make this change, the Results page shows that the unbraced length for both axial and flexure were assigned as 1 foot. I checked and the same thing happens when assigning to the major axis. What is the point of separating the unbraced lengths between axial and flexure in this Assign -> Unbraced Length window if the program just copies what you input for axial to flexure as well?
I can reproduce the same thing and I will log an issue (Re: 1006092). I don't suppose the unbraced length for bending on a vertical brace hardly ever matters since they are usually pinned and not applied self-weight. If you assign the Axial unbraced length and the Bending unbraced length at the same time using values for both (not the global criteria) that should work.
