RAM steel output information

Hello,

I am looking to interrogate some of the output information that RAM is giving me.

Firstly, is there any more "in-depth" output than going through Reports-beam designs? Just wondering whether I am missing something obvious.

Also in the BS5950 design if you go to the beam designs output this shows a modular ratio of 10, but when RAM calculates the Ip it doesn't seem to use this ratio? How does RAM calculate the Live Load and Post composite load deflection?  i.e. what Inertia does it calculate?

I am using BS5950 code to interrogate the output as in the Eurocode beam design report it doesn't specify what modular ratio it is using?

Thanks for your help.

  • The Steel beam design report is the most detailed output we have (there is a less detailed summary).

Regarding the modular ratio, it looks like the user can only set the modular ratio when using the British code (Ram Manger - Criteria - BS5950 Parameters). With the Eurocode the program established the value automatically and it's not reported. The manual says only this:

    10.12.4 Eurocode
To account for the effects of creep and shrinkage on the composite section, a modified modular ratio, n, is used per EN 1994-1-1:2004 Clause 5.4.2.2(11).
When the conditions of Clause 7.3.1(4) are met the effects of incomplete interaction (i.e., partial composite) is ignored for the calculation of the deflections under the post-composite loads. When the conditions of that clause are not satisfied, no methodology for calculation of deflections is given. The methodology given in Clause
5.2.2(6) of ENV 1994-1-1:1992, which is identical to that given in BS 5950:Part 3:Section 3.1:1990 Clause 6.1.4, is used.

Please send me some more details about what you would like to be able to do with the modular ratio and I can pass it along for consideration.

Regarding the deflections, see this post:

  • Has there been any update on the output in RAM Steel beam since this original question? I want to confirm the equations being used generate the output for a composite beam are accurate relative to AISC 360-10.
  • There have been updates to the Ram Structural System since November 2015 and we have added some minor enhancements to the Steel beam design, but the 2010 code has been relatively untouched since then. Is there something specific you are concerned about?

  • My hand calculations for the effective moment of interia (Ieff) is different than the output and would like to verify the method used to calculate it in RAM Steel.
  • Here's a sample calculation for the US codes. The I-effective part is on page 5. A snapshot of that is at the bottom.
