Desiging Hydraulic Structures Using STAAD Pro 8

Good day!

Do you have any idea how to model hydraulic structures in STAAD Pro? Such as desanders and weirs?? Hope I'd get a reply. Thanks!

  • It depends on type of desilting chamber(Like hopper, Du-for type, vortex tube etc type.It can either be done in plate elements or solid elements or in combination of plate  & soli elements.

But require thorough vision of structure & load transfer mechanism & loads. Staad is  very versatile software such that you can 99% simulate the model to prototype(if due care on consistency of plate axes & solid elements node). Accuracy will be very high. The analysis output has to be properly interpreted &  stress concentrations also to be understood properly to vary size depending permissible tension/compression of given grade of concrete and steel by understanding various graphic output view.

Again in this case never use pinned or fixed supports, use soil spring or subgrade modulus. If you have good knowledge of forces & structure, possible outputs, there will not be any chance of "Garbage in_Garbage Out". There is nothing you cant do in staad pertaining to any type of structure.

Finally always ask experts or visionary people before implementation of model as they can tell exactly whether the structure survives or not when implemented. It is important as investment on hydraulic structures are generally several crores
