Failure

sir, I have done a complete analysis on attached structure . after analysis, I find out that no maximum compression and tension stress is greater than the yield stress of steel . Is my structure is safe ? If a structure is not safe or will be break how staad show that failure in output pdf file.

  • If the compressive stress/tensile stress does not exceeds the yield stress, it does not justify that structure is still safe. If you follow the design code, then most of them suggest the designer to determine the allowable compressive stress/strength which is based on the slenderness limit (KL/r). The slenderness consideration itself takes care of the buckling limit of the compressive member. However, if the buckling is not critical, still the code specifies lowering the Fy value by some coefficient. So, the allowable compressive stress/strength is always less then the FY by some factors and hence just by checking if the actual tress is just under the yield stress does not guarantee that the member is same. You need to perform the design. I have reviewed the the design output of your structure. It appears that none of the members are failed (unity ratio less than 1).
