RAM Structural System - Steel Column Panel Zone Shear Calculation

I have a question about how RAM Structural System is calculating steel column panel zone shears in a moment frame per AISC 360-05. It appears to be using equations J10-11 and J10-12, which are only applicable if plastic panel zone deformation is considered in the analysis. For an elastic analysis, equations J10-9 and J10-10 should be used. Please confirm what equation is being used for these checks.

  • Section 3.3.3 in the RAM Frame Steel Post-Processors Manual addresses this question. An excerpt follows:

"Two different equation sets are presented in AISC when performing panel zone checks. The first set (equations LRFD 3rd: K1-9, K1-10 / AISC 360: J10-9, J10-10) is applicable when panel-zone deformation is not considered in the analysis. The second set (LRFD 3rd: K1-11, K1-12 / AISC 360: J10-11, J10-12) is applicable where panel-zone deformation is considered in the analysis. RAM Frame looks at the rigid end factor to determine into which group the structure falls. If full rigid ends are used then RAM Frame assumes that the Panel Zone is not considered in the analysis. If any value less than the full rigid end zone is used, then the program assumes that the panel zone is considered in the analysis and equations LRFD 3rd: K1-11, K1-12 or AISC 360: J10-11, J10-12 are used."

  • Hi Karl,

Could you please elaborate on when to check "Frame stability considered in analysis" option? Thanks!
