Bolt tension capacity

Dear Admin,

If use fasteners from BS bolt table and use AISC for connection design, RAM will caculate bolt tension capacity as per BS5950 not AISC.

Is it possible to combine different tables end standards?

  • The problem is that our bolt databases were created with the idea of having them used with the corresponding standard/specification/code. Mixing one spec with another bolt database is problematic.

The longer explanation is that European codes like BS and EN use the bolt threaded area which is less than the bolt gross area calculated with the nominal diameter. On the other hand, the American and Chinese codes use the gross area. Our databases have just one of these areas, e.g. the American bolt database has the gross area, and the European database has the threaded area. To use the AISC code with British or European bolts we need to provide the bolt gross area and to use the EN or BS code with American bolts we need to provide the threaded area.

We will enhance our databases to include both areas in the future and thus handle code/database mixing. In the meantime, the workaround is to create a copy of the European bolt database and change the area with the desired values.
