How to create custom connection in RAM Connection

Hello everyone!

I would like to ask if I can create my own connections in STAAD's RAM Connection.

Is there a way that I can create predefined connections to which the user is only limited to use?

I wanted to align the choices of connections to our list of standard connections.

This means I am opting not to  use SMART connections.

The BASIC Connections offers a lot of choices to choose from, and most of the time, I needed to change parameters (like Leh, Lev, bolt size, plate thickness etc) to align it with our standard connections. Doing this one by one (say for my structure I have 100 connection joints) is tedious work.

Thank you in advanced for  your help.

  • In the current release of STAAD.pro (SELECT series 6) there is no way to customize the connection templates themselves when using Ram Connection in STAAD.pro. This is being put back in the next release of STAAD.pro (SELECT Series 7 and after, reference Enhancement 569983). Prior versions (SELECT Series 5) could customize the templates as indicated here:

  • Thank you Sir Seth! I was actually trying to work on the .con files inside the RAM Database.

I copied some .con files and imported them in STAAD Pro interface as suggested in the link you sent.

I tried to modify the parameters and see if they will also be reflected in the STAAD Interface.

Some of my confirmations are here:

    1. There are times that STAAD Pro will "exit" whenever I assign the connection I customized.

I am not sure which parameter in the .con file did I incorrectly inputted.

    2. The table in .con files ask for beam section and support section.

For example, I inputted beam size is UB203x25 and support size is UB254x31  and I named it CLIP ANGLE-BG.

Does it mean that this connection is only applicable for UB203x25 connecting to UB254x31?

Can I apply this to UB203x25 connecting to UB305x40, since angle size and bolts are same, or I need to create another entry in the .con file for this?

    3. The bottom flanges of beams in the 3D view of connection pad are missing.

Even if I view them on DXF, bottom flanges seemed to be cut.

Is there any "view depth" adjustments I can do? Im not sure if the bottom flanges are not considered in connection capacity calculation.

    Thank you!
