RAM Connection Vertical Bracing

Where is the option for "Additional Vertical Load" on the vertical brace member?  This was previously an option and allowed the use of Case 2 of the Uniform Force Method to reduce shear demand on the beam connection?

  • I am using RAM connection within RAM SS and can't figure out how to use the "additional vertical load" input for multiple load combinations.  It appears that this input is applied to all load cases and combinations.  How then would I check the beam connection when this additional input load is selected based on one single load combination and causes other load combinations to become irrelevant due to the arbitrary in nature of this input.

    Simply, I would like to check Case 2 for about 350 load combinations.  Each load combination would have a different "additional vertical load" input in order to appropriately check Case 2.  I am unable to see how the current input method for Case 2 is of any use unless you have a single load case/combination for the brace force.  In the abbreviated results below, AS13 is the worst case and I have input the DV = 83.53 Kips.  However, AS15 and D31 then have net shear based on the input DV (additional vertical load) for combination AS13.

    Load condition :AS13
    Special case 2 DG29 p. 24-33

    Vb = eb*P/r - DV
    = 6.9[in]*579.6[kip]/47.88[in] - 83.53[kip]
    = -0.004955[kip] p. 13-5

    Load condition :AS15
    Special case 2 DG29 p. 24-33

    Vb = eb*P/r - DV
    = 6.9[in]*-256.03[kip]/47.88[in] - -83.53[kip]
    = 46.63[kip] p. 13-5

    Load condition :D31
    Special case 2 DG29 p. 24-33

    Vb = eb*P/r - DV
    = 6.9[in]*-2.72[kip]/47.88[in] - -83.53[kip]
    = 83.14[kip] p. 13-5
