Moving load with load combinations

I'm referring to an old response. Would it be technically correct and easier to check which generated load causes the maximum stresses from a crane dedicated model then reflect the corresponding critical load location on the main structure model to be analysed with the load combinations (or repeat loads)? It would be easier than finding the maximum straining action six times for Fx, Fy, Fz, Mx, My & Mz?

  • It will not be a good method I think. For structures with moving loads and other load cases it is very tricky to find out the exact location easily. For moving load the BM & SF will be changing depending upon the load positions. Now due to other cases you will find some other values at every location. So to get the final result you need to take into account the effect of crane load as well as other loads. It may happen that the location where stresses due to moving load is the highest one may not provide you the highest stresses due to other load cases. The highest stress value may be in some other intermittent locations. So you need to investigate more before deciding the location to be used.
