I have designed a platform stair system in STAAD PRO and I am analyzing the effects of using Moment Frame and or Ordinary Frames in it. I have attached 2 models here - One pertaining to Moment Frame (With no releases in platform members) and

RE: Moment Frame and Ordinary Frame Deflections in STAAD

Hi Sal ,

As I mentioned the absolute values are very small. The reason is that majority of the horizontal X-forces is resisted by the stringers that are acting like bracing elements. Therefore, the moment frames are of little help.

RE: Moment Frame and Ordinary Frame Deflections in STAAD

Thanks a lot for your response. Can you please tell me how much difference can you see in displacements. I can see in the worst case scenario like 0.02 only.

RE: Moment Frame and Ordinary Frame Deflections in STAAD

Hi Sal - your releases are correctly defined. your moment frames are stiffening the structure in the X direction and when I check the displacements in that direction, I see appreciable differences, although the absolute values may be small. You need to narrow down your results to combinations with loads in the X-direction.

Another way of testing your structure behavior would be to create a dummy load case with only X-forces acting at the top of your moment frames and then you'll see a difference.

I hope this helps
