Hello,I am performing simple staad analysis and I am getting instability at one of the middle member. Can someone help me to rectify it, please? As per my understanding releases in staad are local and not global so I have released MY and MZ in the middle angle which is facing instability in direction MX and I can't release MX as it would cause torsion then.STAAD SPACESTART JOB INFORMATIONENGINEER DATE 08-Feb-18END JOB INFORMATIONINPUT WIDTH 79UNIT FEET KIPJOINT COORDINATES1 0 0 -2.5; 2 6.5 0 -2.5; 3 0 0 -3; 4 6.5 0 -3; 5 3.25 0 -2.5; 6 3.25 0 -3;MEMBER INCIDENCES1 1 5; 2 3 6; 4 6 4; 5 5 2; 6 6 5;DEFINE MATERIAL STARTISOTROPIC STEELE 4.176e+006POISSON 0.3DENSITY 0.489024ALPHA 6e-006DAMP 0.03TYPE STEELSTRENGTH FY 5184 FU 8352 RY 1.5 RT 1.2G 1.60615e+006END DEFINE MATERIALMEMBER PROPERTY AMERICAN1 2 4 5 TABLE ST C4X66 TABLE ST L30208CONSTANTSBETA 180 MEMB 2 4MATERIAL STEEL ALLSUPPORTS1 TO 4 PINNEDMEMBER RELEASE6 START MY MZ6 END MY MZLOAD 1 LOADTYPE Dead TITLE LOAD CASE 1SELFWEIGHT Y -1 JOINT LOAD1 3 FY -1MEMBER LOAD1 2 CON GY -1 24 5 CON GY -1 0.754 5 CON GY -0.8 2.75LOAD 2 LOADTYPE Dead TITLE LOAD CASE 2SELFWEIGHT Y -1 JOINT LOAD1 3 FY -0.2MEMBER LOAD1 2 CON GY -0.1 24 5 CON GY -0.1 0.754 5 CON GY -0.1 2.75JOINT LOAD1 3 MX 2.25MEMBER LOAD1 2 CMOM GX 0.75 24 5 CMOM GX 0.75 0.754 5 CMOM GX 0.05 2.75LOAD 3 LOADTYPE Dead TITLE LOAD CASE 3SELFWEIGHT Y -1 JOINT LOAD1 3 FY -0.2MEMBER LOAD1 2 CON GY -0.1 24 5 CON GY -0.1 0.754 5 CON GY -0.1 2.75JOINT LOAD1 3 MZ 1.5MEMBER LOAD1 2 CMOM GZ 0.75 24 5 CMOM GZ 0.75 0.754 5 CMOM GZ 0.25 2.75PERFORM ANALYSISPARAMETER 1CODE AISC UNIFIED 2010FU 8352 ALLFYLD 5184 ALLUNT 0 MEMB 6METHOD ASDCHECK CODE ALLFINISH
Your understanding of the releases is correct.
The instabilities at the nodes are however reported with respect to global directions. You are getting these warnings at nodes 5 and 6 as there are no rotational restraints about global X at these nodes because the local MZ moments at the start and end of the angle member are fully released and supports at the ends of the longer beams are PINNED. To take care of the instability warning you may change the full release for the angle member to partial release. A modified file is attached for your reference.
