Hi, Does RAM SS consider the self weight of transfer columns? Considering the self weight options of beam and columns are switched on.
We consider the column self-weight in the column design. In the transfer beam design we also consider it, but only if the column has a user assigned size.
Thank you Seth! In the transfer beam design , what if the column is what the program gives us , will it consider then? Will it consider if we freeze the column size?
You will have to freeze the design (that's the same as user assigned).
Thank you!
I’m pretty sure I checked myself before that last forum reply, but I checked again today using v17.00.00.93 and the column self-weight above is not applied to the gravity – steel transfer beam below, even if the column size is user assigned. A point load is needed in lieu of using Column self-weight in that case. Column self-weight is considered in the loads applied to a lateral beam in Ram Frame, and it is considered in the Ram Concrete analysis, however.
Seth: Good to know thank you, is this some glitch that you're trying to fix in the latest version? Or is it the same in the older versions too?
No, it was just my mistake before. The Ram Steel Beam documentation confirms that column self-weight does not get applied on transfer girders. The reason behind it is complicated, but we want to avoid a cyclical design (beams, then columns, then back to beams...)
No problem, thank you Seth!
Seth: I just want to confirm again when you say it does not have column self weight above. Does it mean all the columns that stack above or the column just above the transfer girder? Thanks!
