Hydraulic cylinder loads

Sir,

With respect to the following structure, kindly clarify the following.

1. This is an land oil drilling structure where is the Mast is assembled horizontally and raised to vertical operational position using cylinders at beam nos. 1.37 & 1.37. I have released moments at both ends of these beams. Still im getting Moment values in results? Is the compressive force of 541 Kilo Pounds is what is required the cylinder to be designed for?

2. Mast is rotated with nodes 365,371,375 & 379 as pivots. Do all the members joining these to be released for moments?

  • 1. As you have released both ends, the moments at the ends will be zero. But due to self-weight and wind load on the member there will be some moment in the member expect the ends. If you want the member to be designed for axial force only and you want to ignore those moments, you can define truss instead of end releases.

    2. Without examining the actual scenario answering this question is bit difficult. But, you can not release all the members meeting at a single joint. It will give you instability. Depending on the connection and supporting arrangement, you can release some members meeting at the joint as per your engineering judgement.
