Without modelling the supports I can't automatically generate spans and also the analysis and reactions does not look right. At the moment I have only modeled the soil as area spring all around the mat foundation. Is that the correct way to do it. Thanks

Yes, applying the area spring over entire mat is OK, but you will have to manually model the design strips, or design sections.
