RAM Concept - reinf development length

My understanding is that the program reinforcing lengths on the reinforcing layer include the required development length.  The screenshot below shows bars that are 18" long; I have also had outputs with bars that are 12" long.  Am I looking in the wrong place for the required bar lengths that include development?

Thank-you.

  • Hi Mike - RAM Concept tracks two types of required reinforcement: developed As and "raw" As (raw here means that the steel may or may not be developed.). You can see the two values in the Reinforcement plots.

Codes (including ACI) tend to have minimum required areas and lengths that correspond to "raw" As needs, and then strength-related requirements that correspond to the need for developed As. Concept's detailing ensures that both sets of requirements are met, but does not take actions like extending the code-minimum lengths to ensure the (minimum) bars are fully developed over the entire code-specified length.

Satisfying these two requirements separately can sometimes result in an oddity such as a 1' bar added at the end of the user-specified bars (this would happen if the user-specified bars were adequate for (developed) strength, but did not meet minimum length requirements). When you see a short bar like that, the best approach is to look at what is driving it. Looking at the Design Status reinforcement plans and turning on the Controlling Criteria (in Visible Objects) will often answer the question.
