I am reviewing (column beam brace) vertical brace connections that use unstiffened single plate connections for the gusset to column web interface. The fabricator has extended the plates out past the column flanges for constructability.
After reviewing the design checks in RAM, I do not see any checks for plate buckling per AISC 360-10 Part 9. For the extended configuration, page 10-105 requires design check 5 which is
"5.Check the plate for the limit state of buckling using the double-coped beam procedure given in Part 9". Can you verify whether or not this check is being performed?
Thank you for your attention to this matter,
Quinton
The only check I see for AISC 360-10 LRFD for the single plate connecting the Gusset to the Column (other than bolt and weld checks) is the Web Crippling check:
Below are the strength checks that I get for gusset to column interface:
Since the fabricator used RAM connection to design this joint, it looks like the buckling limit state has gone unchecked. Is this something that could be added for unstiffened extended shear tabs in general?
