Staad Pro Physical Modeler - Description Group and Attribute

Can you describe what each of these are, how to best use them, and how they import into the analytical model?

  1. "Groups" (in the Data tab)
  2. "Attribute" which is in the properties section within the member tab which appears when you select on a member
  3. "Description" which appears in the spreadsheet: members.

Also how do I create a new group in the physical modeler, I don't seem to have that option when I click on "groups"?

Thanks!

  • Group is used to represent a collection of entities like nodes, beams or surfaces. Once items are put into a group then you can use the group name to select those entities collectively to carry out any further operations on those selected entities like say assigning properties, loads etc. As of now the group definitions do not get transferred from SPPM to the analytical model.

Attributes allow you to assign beam, column or brace attribute to a member. Description allows you to put a unique name for entities. For example you can have the attribute “column” set to all columns in your model whereas the first floor and second floor columns can have different descriptions like “first floor columns”, “second floor columns” respectively. As of now these do not transfer to the analytical model either but these are information that can be helpful for future integrations of model data between STAAD.Pro and other applications.

One of the quickest ways to create a New Group is to select the entities, right click and choose Group > New Group

  • Sye thanks for this response. This will be helpful in the future for selecting such objects.

in the SPPM, can I select members based on "group", "Attribute", and "Description" or only based on "group"?

    Thanks again!

  • Yes you can select by groups, description as well as attribute. To select by groups you can simply right click and pick Groups from the context menu, choose the appropriate group name and click Select. To select by Description or Attribute, you may go to the Spreadsheet > Member, click on any cell that has the desired attribute or description, right click and choose "Find and select"
